The perfect synthesis of traditional Polynesian and cutting edge America’s Cup design.
The Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association (HSCA) fleet consists primarily of 45 foot, 6 person, traditional Hawaiian Sailing Canoes outfitted with a triangular sail. Our three person Holopuni is 30 feet long with three paddling seats. Most importantly, we have engineered and installed many innovative design and safety features that make Lo’ihi the perfect synthesis of traditional Polynesian and cutting edge America’s Cup design.
The Na Holokai Channel crossing from Oahu to Kauai is so treacherous that in 1796 King Kamehameha was forced to retreat with a flotilla of over 100 vessels, and never conquered the Island of Kauai. The Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association has been competing in annual crossings of the Channel for 35 years. In 2008 Olukai set the record time for crossing between Oahu and Kauai in 7 hours 16 minutes. In that race, years before we installed fixed stays, jib and genniker, Lo’ihi finished fourth out of nine canoes in 7 hours 38 minutes. In a straight paddling race the six person canoes will be faster, But in a sailing race, Lo’ihi’s performance would be superior.
